My first call back after a mammogram
Much to my dismay, my doctor suggested that I start getting yearly mammograms 3 years ago.
That alone was a hard enough pill to swallow—I was officially of the age where I had to start adding extra appointments to my calendar.
Of course, I’d heard all the rumors about mammograms being painful and a nuisance overall.
I wasn’t really worried about the pain or getting cancer. I mostly hated the fact that I had to do it, while still being grateful that I have the ability to get checked.
In the past, the visits were calm (minus the squishing and tugging and fondling of my breasts), and I was in and out in a half hour. Easy peasy.
This year, the reminder came in the mail, and I put it off for two months before making an appointment. There’s no breast cancer in my family, so I don’t have big fears of being diagnosed — I have waaay too many other fears that take up more space in my brain and life.
They said it would take up to a couple of weeks to get results since I went to a different place, and my records needed to be sent over.
But I got a call two days after my exam.
They said they found something that needed a better look and I should go in as soon as possible.
